Journey to Parenthood - Courses, workshops and one 2 one sessions

Our new and innovative courses and workshops are hosted in a friendly, nurturing environment using a mix of activities, discussion and film clips throughout the sessions. The group number of each course is a comfortable size to ensure the group needs are met. Not too big but big enough to start making new friendships that can last beyond this pregnancy and throughout this new and exciting part of your life.

About the course led by Sandra Barrett... This four week course consists of weekly two hours sessions covering many aspects of pregnancy, labour, birth, feeding and life with a new baby. The content of the sessions is outlined below.

  • Week One: Helping you and your baby through pregnancy and birth Welcome and introduction to the group – who is helpful to you and how – looking after your own emotional well being – relaxation and breathing techniques

  • Week Two: Getting to know your baby in the womb Baby development in the womb – positions of baby in the womb – the importance of your relationship to baby’s development

  • Week Three: You, your baby and the stages of labour Helping you and your baby through labour and birth – understanding the signs and stages of labour – active birth positions and the process of labour  – thinking about pain relief – thinking about support in labour – plan for home

  • Week Four: Feeding your baby Feeding as part of your relationship with your baby – discussion on feeding options – breastfeeding basics – keeping baby’s safe – baby blues – frequency of feeding – types of milk – seeking support

  •  Follow up support via e-mail or telephone is also included in the cost of the course

About the course led by Sandra Barrett...this weekend course includes many aspects of pregnancy, labour, birth, feeding and life with a new baby. The two days consist of:

Saturday:

Helping you and your baby through pregnancy and birth
  • Welcome and introduction to the group – who is helpful to you and how – looking after your own emotional well being – relaxation and breathing techniques
Getting to know your baby in the womb
  • Baby development in the womb – positions of baby in the womb – developing your relationship in relation to baby’s development
You, your baby and the stages of labour
  • Getting to know your baby through labour and birth – understanding the signs of labour – understanding the stages of labour

Sunday:

Helping you and your baby through labour and birth
  • Active birth positions – process of labour – thinking about pain relief – thinking about support in labour – plan for home
Feeding your baby
  • Feeding as part of your relationship with your baby – discussion on feeding options – breastfeeding basics – keeping baby’s safe – baby blues – frequency of feeding – types of milk – seeking support
Caring for your baby
  • Preparing for practical aspects of caring for a baby – using everyday activities to build upon your relationship with baby – tuning in to your baby to support their emotional development

A postnatal reunion is also included within the cost of the course where the group, complete with new arrivals can meet up and share experiences and stories. Follow up support via e-mail and telephone is also included in the cost of the course.

  • How breastfeeding and bottle feeding, bonding, stroking and touching your baby are integral to developing a relationship
  • How to keep your baby safe and reduce the risk of cot death
  • Baby blues and postnatal depression
  • How feeding is part of developing a relationship with your baby
  • Benefits and concerns regarding breastfeeding
  • Basic breastfeeding skills
  • Frequency of feeding
  • Types of milk
  • What support is available

The PANDAS organisation is a national support network with online support and peer support groups throughout the country.

The North Tyneside PANDAS Support Group is a peer led group for women and their families in North Tyneside, and it’s surrounding area, who are experiencing primary mental health issues in the antenatal and postnatal period of their life.
